Go Penguins - 22 November 2009 - 10 January 2010 Liverpool

Across the region, behind closed doors, an invasion was being planned. Businesses, artists and communities knew the secret – even the children were getting ready. Then, one by one, they came. A street corner here, a shopping centre there, until the people awoke to find them throughout Liverpool, St. Helens and the Wirral - over 200 clever and colorful penguins with a story to tell...

Go Penguins is a public art explosion of unrivalled proportions. Over 200 individual works of art will adorn and animate Merseyside’s streets throughout Christmas and New Year, bringing a very special brand of festive sparkle to the holiday season. Commissioned by Liverpool City Council for their Year of the Environment, Go Penguins is the signature event of the city’s festive programme, A Winter’s Trail. Many of the penguins have something to say about climate change – simple, easy to follow hints on how we might all be a little bit greener. Many others are just stunning to look at - all of them are fun!

Grab your family and friends and have fun exploring the Go Penguins trail before they waddle away on 10 January!

Biggest Daytime Fireworks Show Ever - At the Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, Qatar this week, Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang put on his largest "explosion event" of the last three years, utilizing microchip-controlled explosives to form incredible designs and patterns. The video we've embedded of the event is an impressive testament to how a volatile black powder explosion can be controlled and shaped by computer.

Each set of explosions was calculated to paint a different picture. One series of explosions created black smoke clouds that looked like "drops of ink splattered across the sky."

In another, 8,300 shells embedded with computer microchips exploded in a pyramid shape over the desert.
